Developer TH Real Estate, in partnership with Wiltshire Council, has submitted a planning application for a new 86-bedroom Travelodge hotel, new library, gym and restaurant in Salisbury city centre.
The application marks the first phase of a multi-million-pound regeneration of the Maltings area. The proposal will see the transformation of the block on Fisherton Street and Malthouse Lane into a new facility that will help support the city’s visitor economy and commence the long-planned transformation of this important city centre site.
The application has been put together in good time to help bring forward the proposed regeneration in response to recent events in the city. It will now undergo the usual robust planning process, with a decision expected in the spring.
This initial phase forms part of wider plans that will be the subject to further planning applications later this year. These plans are expected to include a comprehensive development of the existing library area at Market Walk and the public spaces within the Maltings.
More than £6m in funding has been secured from the Swindon & Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership (SWLEP) to support the delivery of the Maltings regeneration scheme. This money is not being used for the initial phase, to which this planning application relates, but the early delivery of this phase will help accelerate the future phases and public realm enhancements that will directly benefit from the funding that has been secured.

“This proposal will deliver important change in this location and will help bring more visitors to our beautiful city.
“It will also allow us to relocate the library into a new purpose-built facility so enhancements to Market Walk and the further phases of the city’s transformation can progress.”
