Community Advocates support people by enabling them to find information, understand their rights and choices, have a voice and make their own informed decisions.
Community Advocates may support people in making difficult or important decisions which may impact on their quality of life and independence and have long term consequences.
Community Advocates support people to deal with particular issues.
As a Volunteer Community Advocate you will be matched to an individual needing support with issues that are affecting their lives.
A Volunteer Community Advocate can support someone to:
- Find information so they can make their own choices and understand the consequences of those choices,
- Understand their rights and make sure they are respected,
- Have a voice about what is happening in their life,
- Make a complaint if they are not happy about something.
A Volunteer Community Advocate may support someone with any of the following:
- Welfare reform,
- Raising a complaint,
- Attending a meeting.
A Volunteer Community Advocate does not:
- Provide advice,
- Act as a counsellor,
- Act as a befriending service,
- Make decisions,
- Force their opinions on someone,
- Fill in forms.
