More volunteers needed for Ofsted-praised scheme

19th August 2019, 1:47pm | By Anthony Andrews |

Ofsted has praised a scheme which provides “valuable support” by linking independent adult volunteers with young people in care.

Our Independent Visitor Scheme has been running for 19 years, and links young people in care with independent adult volunteers who are able to spend quality, fun time with them on a regular basis.

Ofsted recently inspected our Children’s Services and rated it good in all areas.

It singled out the Independent Visitor Scheme for praise saying: “Good use of independent visitors gives children a valuable support to have their views heard and their rights upheld.”

The scheme currently has 58 volunteers but the council would like to grow and develop it further.

Quotes from some of the volunteers who take part in the scheme:
“I’m someone that doesn’t have to be there for her, I’m there because I want to be.”
“We laugh, smile and generally have fun.”
“I think that having an IV makes her feel valued and special.”

More volunteers are needed to link up with young people in the west of the county and the scheme is particularly keen to hear from men, who are under-represented.

Pauline Church, Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Skills, said: “This scheme has a simple idea at its heart providing our young people in care with a trusted adult who help make a positive difference.

“I’m delighted Ofsted has recognised this and I would encourage more people to come forward and be a part of this important scheme that is rewarding for everyone involved.”
