“Relax and listen to stories and poems in a small friendly shared reading group.”

People living with dementia and their carers do not need to be alone. A shared reading memory group is where people can come together to read and discuss literature in an open and supportive environment.”

In a nutshell: A shared reading group for people living with memory loss, Dementia, Alzheimer’s and their carers. Relax and listen to stories and poems in a small friendly shared reading group with a trained volunteer. Free of charge and refreshments provided.

What makes this project special:

Living with dementia can sometimes be a hard and lonely experience; with this in mind a shared reading memory group can promote social inclusion and wellbeing, through:

  • stimulating positive memories by reading aloud and sharing quality literature;
  • social engagement – opportunity to meet and interact with others, build friendships and have fun;
  • support – developing a network of local people living with similar circumstances;
  • a sense of self-esteem as opinions are sought, shared and respected, (sometimes parts of the sessions are led by group members);
  • stimulation which can improve memory, comprehension and language;
  • something for everyone involved to look forwards to;
  • connection – a better understanding of the person living with dementia and a new component to relationships.
