Opportunity: Artist brief for Fabric of Life 2, a heritage lottery funded project

Barnardo’s is seeking an artist/artists to work alongside young people with additional needs who are exploring and researching the history of fashion as expression of identity. The young people will be working towards an exhibition/final showing that will tour local Wiltshire Museums in February 2021.

Background

The project will focus upon the history of fashion as expression of identity, and in particular the marginalised social and cultural identities of the LGBTQ+ community. There is an extensive collection of fashion held by Salisbury Museum and a significant collection of textiles held by the Trowbridge Museum and Chippenham Museum. This project will draw upon these resources to inspire young people to learn about fashion in different eras and how a range of sub-cultures deployed fashion as expressions of personal identity or to make political statements.

This project will have two phases to it; a research and exploration phase in which young people will visit the museums as well as the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre and undertake original research. This will be followed by a making phase in which the young people will create an exhibition which may include an installation, performance, film, music or dance.

The project will be led by young people with additional needs aged 13 to 19.

Brief

We are seeking expressions of interest from artists in any art form with a good history of inspirational work that is rooted in participatory arts principles. A background in working with young people with additional needs, aged 13-19 as well as engaging with diverse partners is essential. Work will be delivered across Wiltshire from February to December 2020 with the exhibition taking place in February 2021. The artist/s will be required to work evenings and weekends where project events occur.

We welcome the following:

  • Quality and integrity of process and production
  • Imagination and innovation in engagement practice
  • Significant experience of participatory practice, especially with young people
  • Up to date DBS clearance and public liability insurance

Timescale

The successful applicant will need to be ready to start working on the project in February 2020 and the final piece will need to be complete and ready to show to an audience by February 2021.

Fee

The artists fee is £30 per hour inclusive. This should cover a weekly attendance at the youth group (2 hours per week for up to three terms), any rehearsal days, research and any additional hours needed.

There are two groups in need of an artist – Salisbury (Tuesday evenings) and Trowbridge (Wednesday evenings).

Apply

Please send your CV and a letter detailing how you would approach the project to Emily Malcolm (emily.malcolm@live.com), external consultant and project coordinator by 10 February 2020.

Interviews will take place 13 February 2020.
