Crofton Beam Engines presents a talk by Michael William Pitkeathly MBE

Life on a Nuclear Submarine

The Assembly Rooms, Marlborough Town Hall

Friday 10th January 2020

7.00pm for 7.30pm

A talk that takes you into life on board an operational Hunter Killer submarine during the cold war and unravells the air of mystique around nuclear submarines.

Michael William Pitkeathly MBE served for thirty-three years in the Royal Navy and most of this time was spent in the Submarine Service. Retired as a Warrant Officer in 1997 he has devoted much time with renovating the former HMS Courageous a nuclear-powered hunter killer submarine which is now berthed in the Dockyard at Devonport and open to the public for pre-booked tours.

Hear about living in onboard HMS Courageous in the 1970’s and 80’s and how the crew lived for extended periods in a steel tube. Learn about working routines, catering facilities and much else besides.

You will learn about how the atmosphere was controlled, the problems of accommodation, how the crew were organised and how they spent their off-watch times.

This talk will give you an appreciation of what it was like to be a crew member on one of the Royal Navies elite hunter killer submarines that were constantly on patrol during the very tense cold war period.

Tickets £10-00 include light refreshments and a cash bar.

Available through www.eventbrite.co.uk or by application – telephone 01672 870300
