Funding available for local VE day celebrations

13th February 2020, 9:15pm | By richardrogers |

On Friday May 8th, it will be the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. This is when the Allies of World War II  accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany.

The national celebration will cover the weekend 8th – 10th May and will be an international celebration of peace as well as a time to remember and reflect. To enable communities too mark this event, the bank holiday has been put back 4 days from 4th May to 8th May.

Pewsey Community Area Board Councillors have agreed that they would like to offer some financial support to groups that are organising community parties or other events to commemorate 100 years since VE day.

Some funding has been ring-fenced to offer some help to our local communities to mark this important event when fighting came to an end. These occasions help build stronger communities and allow people to get to know those who live near them including those who may be lonely or isolated. They also provide an opportunity for education, remembrance and reflection.

If you live in the Pewsey Community Area, it may be that your village, organisation, group or neighbourhood is looking to put an event on and could use some additional money. If so, please contact me so that I can email you a short form to complete and return to me by the end of February 2020.

Funding will be allocated at the Pewsey Area Board meeting on March 9th, taking place at the Pewsey Vale Campus from 7pm. Your actual award depends upon demand but is unlikely to be more than £300. You are most welcome to attend the meeting and enjoy the various presentations and agenda items being discussed

We are unable to pay money to individuals, so you will need a group or organisation with a bank account that is willing to be responsible for the funding.
