Volunteer Youth Worker – Outdoor Activities

The Youth Adventure Trust is a youth development charity providing a programme of outdoor and adventurous activities for vulnerable young people from Wiltshire and Swindon. As a volunteer you will be supporting young people aged 11 to 16 years old, and taking part in the activities alongside them. The Youth Adventure Trust programme consists of three camps which are run in the Brecon Beacons, Dorset and the Forest of Dean. Travel to the camps is provided from the Swindon and Wiltshire areas. The programme also includes some single day activities which take place in Swindon or Wiltshire. The majority of camps run in the school summer holidays in July and August, but there are also opportunities to get involved throughout the rest of the year.

An annual training weekend takes place at the beginning of July in the Brecon Beacons, and we encourage all new volunteers to attend wherever possible. Some alternative training may be available, but the full weekend course is an annual event.

Your role will be to support the young people, assist with their welfare and ensure they gain maximum benefit from their experience. Previous experience of working with young people would be beneficial, but is not essential.

Some experience of working with 11 – 16 year olds would be useful, as would previous experience of outdoor activities.  However we have a diverse and varied group of volunteers, with a variety of life experience and skills and we would encourage anyone with an enthusiasm for working with young people to apply.

The camps are based in the Brecon Beacons, Dorset and Gloucestershire. We accept applications from all over the country and provide travel to the activities from the Wiltshire area. We will endeavour to help you with travel arrangements to Wiltshire where possible.

18 years old minimum. Please note, younger applicants will require relevant experience.

Travel expenses covered where applicable.

Induction and training given.

Support is offered from a dedicated Volunteer Manager and other permanent staff. New volunteers also work alongside people who have previous experience of volunteering with the Youth Adventure Trust.

Our volunteers are role models to the vulnerable young people we work with and as such, should be responsible, resilient, good at communicating, patient and enthusiastic.
