Community Self Build – Building Lives by Building Homes

12th May 2017, 11:53am | By Steve |

“I was encouraged by the local council to apply for the CSBA Scheme, I rang them and said; “I am disabled, unemployed, on benefits and I know nothing of building.” They said; “You fit all the criteria!” I have never looked back.”

In a nutshell:

The Community Self Build Agency aim is to help more people, in housing need, to build their own homes. It can put potential self builders in touch with each other, help them link up with local partners and convince others that such projects are worthy of their support.

What makes this project special:

Community self build is about a group of local people in housing need, building their own homes and gaining much more besides. As the concept of community self build becomes more widely known, it is more likely that projects will be initiated by potential self builders, rather than other organisations. Some projects have already been initiated by groups of individuals. Those without building skills, participate on the basis that they are prepared to make the necessary time commitment and be prepared to learn new skills.

The Community Self Build Agency aims to make it possible for men and women from all backgrounds to benefit individually and collectively from being a member of a self build housing group. Whilst participating in the planning, design and building of their own homes they acquire a range of skills and experience. The Agency is particularly interested in opening up opportunities for those with limited income or the unemployed to participate.

How you can replicate this project where you live:

  • Find a group of like-minded families. This may happen via an existing organisation such as a residents’ association. More often it is the result of the efforts of one or two individuals who initiate a search for like-minded people in their vicinity
  • Once the group has been assembled, it is important to agree some formal rules. You need to establish that everyone takes a similar view on how things will be run and has the commitment that is needed.
  • Once you have your group get in touch with http://www.communityselfbuildagency.org.uk/ for more information

Support from your local community engagement manager:

You can access documents, templates and funding advice from your local community engagement manager to help get your project started:
