Lansdown Loop via Langridge

Sunday, 3 July, 9:15am, Moderate 10.2 miles / 16.4 km

This circular walk starts from the Lansdown P&R free carpark, GR: ST731680, Nearest postcode: BA1 9DT, Start time: 10:00am and takes in parts of the Cotswold Way and visits the site of the first English Civil War battle of Lansdown fought on 5 July 1643. Going clockwise from the P&R we pass Beckford’s Tower then down to Weston via Primrose Wood. Joining the Cotswold Way, we pass Kelston Round Hill and on to Prospect stile with far reaching views out to the Bristol Channel and the Black Mountains of Wales. Heading past Hanging Hill we visit the Grenville Monument before dropping down into Langridge passing the 12th century St Mary Magdalene’s Church. Our final ascent will take us back to the Charlcombe Inn and the racecourse for the last stroll into the P&R. Total ascent: 1493ft. Please bring your lunch. Lifts are suggested at £3.20.

A Sunday Saunter in and around Ravensroost Wood

Sunday, 10 July, 1:15pm, Leisurely 4.8 miles / 7.7 km

Parking is at Ravensroost Wood, GR: SU020876, Nearest postcode: SN16 9RN. Starting from the car park at 2pm, we will meander our way around parts of Ravensroost wood, then taking a shaded byway, we will head to Somerford Common and explore the trails. We will return via Avis Meadow Nature reserve. There will be plenty of time allowed for photography, as we should hopefully see plenty of birds, and butterflies, as well as some bees with their own big house! The tracks could be muddy. Lifts are suggested at £2.80.

Haresfield Beacon and the Painswick Valley

Sunday, 17 July, 9am, Moderate 10 miles / 16.1 km

We start at 10am at the National Trust Shortwood car park, GR: SO832085, Nearest postcode: GL6 6PP by heading along the side of the hill fort to take in the Beacon and the resulting Welsh views across the Severn Valley. We follow the Western escarpment on the Cotswold Way towards Painswick, drop into the valley at Kingsmill and hence to Pitchcombe. We climb steadily to Harefield Farm where we collect the Cotswold Way again and head Southwest through the woods to loop back through the valley to finally climb uphill to the Topograph and back to the cars. Please bring a packed lunch. Lifts are suggested at £5.00.

Suburbs of Bath and Bristol

Saturday, 23 July, Moderate 17 miles / 27.4 km

Today’s walk departs from Bath Spa Railway Station at 0900hrs, subject to the 0841hrs train from Chippenham arriving on time.  Meet at Chippenham Railway Station in time to catch the 08:41 hrs train to Bath. The cost of a return ticket to Bristol Temple Meads is £10.10. We’ll then follow the River Avon to the start of the Bristol & Bath Railway Path. The route, which is on tarmac and pavement throughout takes us via Saltford, Warmley and Mangotsfield Junction. Subject to the cafe at Bitton station being open, we’ll stop for a beverage. Please bring your lunch.

A Sunday afternoon stroll from the village of Luckington out to Giants Grave and back. The walk starts at 2pm from The Green (B4040) opposite the Primary School, The Street, Luckington, (What3words: spend, conductor, trams). Please Park thoughtfully in the village, GR: ST833839, Nearest postcode: SN14 6PB. Lifts are suggested at £2.20.

Avening and Minchinhampton Common

Sunday, 31 July, Moderate 7.5 miles / 12.1 km

Today’s walk starts at 10:15am from opposite the Bell Inn in Avening, GR: ST 880980, Nearest postcode: GL8 8NF, from where we ascend into Hazel Wood before dropping down to the B4104.  Then it’s back up again, via Box, onto the splendid Minchinhampton Common.  After passing through Minchinhampton it’s a long, slow descent back to the start, skirting Gatcombe Park.  Please bring your lunch. Lifts are suggested at £3.80.
