Wordfest

A passion for teaching kids to become readers, to become comfortable with a book, not daunted. Books shouldn’t be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.’ (Roald Dahl)

A festival of events and activities celebrating literacy and story telling for all ages and abilities.

In a nutshell:

Calne brought together local people, organisations and groups to provide a festival of events that celebrated words, storytelling and communication; from space stories to cooking ‘Revolting Recipes’, to finding out how to get published or being inspired to read with your child.

What makes this project special:

Calne identified that there was a high number of local people who found literacy a barrier to employment, socialising and gaining access to information. This was found for all age ranges. A group of local people developed the Wordfest idea to engage with local people in a fun and informal way to find out more about the needs of the community and how they might address them.

Each event was developed and run by a different group who either already offered something or put on something new, forming a menu of activities that could carry on throughout the year. Some events, like our Roald Dahl trail lasted all through the week as people visited shops in the town to put together clues from books.

Activities included:

  • Pub beer mats and bananagrams alongside pub quizzes
  • Poetry and Short Story competitions and workshops
  • Family Learning- puppets and singing
  • Speech and Language drop in
  • Folk music evening
  • Astronomy- Stories of the Sky
  • Revolting Recipes- Cooking
  • Job Club and IT skills
  • Schools dress up days
  • Spooky stories- pub meal
