Wooden finger post renewal

26th April 2017, 10:47am | By Steve |

“Finger posts are a very important part of the appearance of many of our rural roads.”

In a nutshell:

Wooden finger posts are road signs in rural areas used to direct travellers to other nearby places whilst contributing to the appearance of the rural road scene. Over time these posts can deteriorate and local parishes/volunteers are encouraged to take steps to maintain and renew these where appropriate. Local craftspeople can be used to do the work according to Wiltshire Council’s specification and guidance, with Wiltshire Council providing a service to remove/insert the post as required.

What makes this project special:

Wiltshire has over 4,000km of roads, more than 85% of which are non-principle (B and C roads) and unclassified roads. Wooden finger posts have been used on many C class and unclassified rural roads with a Wiltshire specification that distinguishes the area from neighbouring counties. Local parish communities often take pride in the appearance of their local environment and repairing broken finger posts helps with this as well as providing a useful service for road users. Volunteers who get involved can gain through:

  • sense of purpose – learning new skills, sharing knowledge;
  • sense of accomplishment – personal achievement, contributing to the community
  • sense of control – co-participants in decision and activities
  • social engagement – opportunity to meet and interact with others, a physical place to spend time, develop friendships, enjoyment and fun
  • improving the local environment
  • supporting local craftspeople through the opportunity of them doing the repair work
