There was a good turn out of people to Devizes Area Board’s meeting on a cold, dark night this week. I had to scrape ice of my windscreen to get home! The audience heard updates from Devizes’ Police inspector and Angus McPherson, the Police & Crime Commissioner as well as Heads of the area’s secondary schools. There was also an update on the Market Square from the Town Clerk, Simon Fisher.
The main presentation on the night came from Rowena Lansdown, Wiltshire Council’s Anti-Social Behaviour officer. She spoke in detail about her role and the process of working with both victims and perpetrators to better understand the situation so it can be resolved.
Finally on the night, Devizes Area Board awarded over £10,000 of funding to local organisations running community-led projects. Devizes Outdoors Celebratory Arts (DOCA) received nearly £5,000 towards a series of workshops to take place as part of preparations for next year’s carnival. They will work with local schools and other organisations to create many of the amazing things you’ll see go past. St James’ Church, Devizes was awarded the full £5,000 towards the refurbishment of the old Estcourt Centre. This will become a community centre that will benefit the whole community. Lastly, WCIL received funding to help put on a “Christmas Shindig” for local people who are isolated and lonely.
