Inspiration for next generation of engineers

Local engineers are working alongside teachers to inspire the next generation of young innovators in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire Council and national organisation Primary Engineer, along with help from engineering industry partners DSTL and QinetiQ, are funding the scheme which trains up teachers and links schools with engineers to bring engineering and future career opportunities alive in the classroom.

A number of secondary and primary school teachers have already benefitted from the training and in January more opportunities will be available.

Teachers receive training and then go back to their schools to carry out a project aided by a local engineer who visits regularly to ensure the scheme is on track. There is also potential to take part in a national competition.

The programme inspires pupils to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

The scheme is one aspect of Wiltshire Council’s support for the Year of Engineering and for Tomorrow’s Engineers Week (5- 9 November).

Laura Mayes, cabinet member for children, education and skills said: “When you’re sitting at a desk in a primary or secondary classroom, talk of STEM careers may seem a world away. The scheme is different as teachers receive training and are inspired to pass that enthusiasm onto their pupils as they work on an exciting project. The added bonus is there will be an engineer working with the school and providing that link to the world of work.”

Fifteen primary and two secondary schools were trained in the previous school year and in January 2019 there will be an additional 15 primary school places and three secondary school places available.

One of the teachers who completed the course recently said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the day and it has greatly increased my knowledge and confidence in teaching STEM projects.”

Another said: “Really interesting day to see how engineering and STEM can be delivered in school and how we can make it interesting for the children.”
