Community minibus

“Local community transport schemes can be a key provider of ‘local access’ services and a safety net to meet important needs that cannot be effectively provided for by other means.”

In a nutshell:

Community Transport is the name given to any type of transport run on a not-for-profit basis to assist people who cannot access private or public transport for any reason. A community minibus scheme can take children to school, sick people to access healthcare and older and disabled people to the shops. A local scheme can also adapt and respond to the needs and demands in that area, providing an enhanced service for the community.

What makes this project special:

Given current pressures on public expenditure it is expected that there will be reductions in the level of service that can be provided by the conventional bus network. There is an exciting opportunity for community minibus schemes to play a larger role in future, helping to respond to the specific needs and requirements of their community. With this is mind the desired outcomes of a community minibus scheme can promote social inclusion and wellbeing, through:

  • sense of purpose – learning new skills, sharing knowledge;
  • sense of accomplishment – personal achievement, contributing to the community
  • sense of control – co-participants in decision and activities
  • social engagement – opportunity to meet and interact with others, get out and about in your community, develop friendships, enjoyment and fun, take part in day trips
  • self esteem, self worth, self image – feeling positive and valued;
  • support – belonging, being an important part of the local community
  • Community minibus schemes support many other individuals and local groups – e.g. access for hospital appointments, people able to access
