Colerne Choices

39% of young people across Wiltshire stated they needed more positive leisure time activities. Corsham Area Young People’s Needs Assessment identified a range of activities from arts to sport to adventure. Colerne responded in the most positive of ways…..

In a nutshell:

Since bid approval in March 2016 Colerne Choices have delivered 11 community-led projects or activities, over a 10-month period that have provided around 130 young people, ages 13-19yrs, with opportunities to grow and develop within a safe and caring community. All activities are needs led based on local engagement and consultation with young people by the Colerne community.

Their events have ranged from Boot Camp on the Colerne Rec to Cookery School at the Lucknam Micheline * Cookery School – from Mountain Biking in the Forrest of Dean to Make-up and Skin Care lessons in the Colerne Café. They ran archery and sorb football on the Colerne Recreation ground, and a skateboard event in the skate park with a well-known skateboarder who put on an amazing skateboarding display.

What makes this project special:

It has become apparent throughout the year that the activities have had a positive influence on the young people. The young people have become noticeably less isolated, more confident, and more respectful of one another and the Colerne adult community; they are forming their own youth community and are starting to look out for each other.

And Here’s what some of the young people said:

    • ‘I can’t wait to be 13 so I can join in’           ’can you please arrange mountain biking again or something similar, like mountain walking’         ‘cookery school was cool, can we do it again?’

How you can replicate this project where you live:

  • Talk to young people, and local schools to assess the need
  • Approach local funders
  • Set up a Management group
  • Set up a club bank account
  • Sort safeguarding procedures – contact ‘Runaclub’ http://runaclub.com/ for an online management system
  • Research activity providers in relation to the need, and book them
  • Market the offer
