Get Active keeps kids busy this summer

12th July 2018, 3:24pm | By chippenhamcem |

With the summer holidays only weeks away, Wiltshire Council’s Get Active programmehas sports and activities for young people of all ages.

Our sports camps this year include athletics, basketball, cricket, dance, tennis and football, and are run alongside partners including Wiltshire Cricket, Wiltshire Tennis and Swindon Town Football in the Community.

These fun and inclusive camps are open to all abilities, and offer challenges, games, coaching and competitions throughout the week.

Wiltshire Council is also running inclusive sport days for any young person with a disability aged eight-19. Athletics, basketball, cricket and tennis are all on offer.

In rural areas, the popular, multi-sport Fun in the Sun programme returns to 27 village venues around the county for 90-minute sessions of outdoor games, activities and sports.  Delivered at each venue for four weeks, this programme is aimed at young people aged five to 11 years old and is free to attend.

Based in leisure centres around Wiltshire, Camp Activate provides a range of exciting activities for young people aged five to 14 years during the holidays.

The sessions are run by qualified staff in line with Ofsted guidelines, with limited places to make sure they are safe. Each week has a different theme, so there is something for everyone at an affordable price.

Another leisure centre-based programme is our intensive swimming lessons. They are a great way to introduce your child to swimming, allowing them to gain confidence in the water while developing new skills.

Finally, free swimming for under 16s is available during specific sessions at swimming pools across the county. Young people must register for this programme in advance.

John Thomson, cabinet member for leisure, said: “The Get Active programme is a great way to keep youngsters active and occupied throughout the summer holidays and offers something for everyone, from making friends to learning new skills.”
