Creative Exhibitions & Workshops at Chippenham Museum

17th October 2019, 6:08pm | By claire selman |

Chippenham Museum’s latest temporary exhibition ‘Strange & Wonderful Beings: The Work of Clifford & Rosemary Ellis’, is open to enjoy until 18th January with free entry. From tube posters to wartime sketches, explore the artistic output of this fascinating design duo and their legacy at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham. Displayed alongside these will be works by Howard Hodgkin, William Scott and the other famous lecturers who taught at the school.

The exhibition includes loans from the Art and Design Collection of Bath Spa University and the Ellis Family Archive that was given to the Victoria Art Gallery in 2016 is shared with the Bath Record Office.

Upstairs in the museum visitors can find a new playful and theatrical display ‘The Obscure Eye presents…’, open until 11 January. A fanciful exploration of circus and equally its audience, the display has been created by artist Grieg Miles and includes drawings, costumes and cabinets of curiosities. Visitors can experience the story of the Ringmaster, a Stag Beetle and his human wife, their circus family and performing fleas.

Inspired by this exhibition, on Friday 1 November between 6pm and 8pm Chippenham Museum is holding special event ‘Chippenham Museum’s Cabinet of Gin & Curiosity’ as part of Museums at Night. A night at the museum like no other… the event includes circus sideshows and curious happenings all served with a glass of locally produced gin. Tickets (£10, book here) include a welcome gin and booking is essential. Please note this event is for ages 18+.

Chippenham Museum has also launched a new programme of adult creative workshops, with a variety of skills available to try once month with local artists and makers. On Saturday 2 November create your own sketchbook and fill it with drawing techniques with Chippenham artist April Barlow (£15, book here). On Saturday 7 December make Festive Glass Stars with local glass artist Mary Quarmby (£10, book here).  Booking is essential for the workshops via the museum’s website, where you can find further details with more dates to be announced soon.

Chippenham Museum, a Chippenham Town Council facility, is free to visit and tells the story of the people and history of Chippenham and surrounding villages from prehistoric times up until the present day with a varied programme of exhibitions and displays.
