In a nutshell:
This project developed out of a group of residents desire to sing. They found themselves a Musical Director and launched in June 2013, with very little idea whether the community would be interested. They held two free open evenings in the town hall which were swamped with eager participants, totalling 160 applicants to join the new choir!
Taking advice from their MD, and also not fancying the logistical issues of running a group with over 100 members, they capped the choir at 80, and pulled names out of a hat – no auditions and no experience required, and created a brilliant mix of individuals.
Since then they’ve worked incredibly hard to achieve their aim of singing professional quality, four part harmony pieces from all types of music. Many of the members can’t read music, some had never even sung before, and very few had ever stood up to perform, but they work together and created something to be really proud of.
What makes this project special:
Their Seniors Tea Party was held at the Malmesbury Town Hall, the event fulfilled one of the choir’s aims of bringing music to the community. Guests came from Malmesbury & the surrounding area and transport was organised for those who would normally have difficulty getting out to such an event.
The afternoon started with high tea, prepared and served by choir members, followed by a medley of musical treats from the choir’s rapidly increasing repertoire. Musical director, Laurie Jones, even had the audience joining in. Everyone thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with comments such as “What I liked was that you could hear all the words!” and “You looked as if you were enjoying yourselves”.
The MCC are proud to be able to do this free to help those senior citizens, who would normally be restricted to their homes, to enjoy an afternoon out. It was such a success that MCC intend to make it an annual event. How you can replicate this project where you live:
- Identify the need – how to access those most in need?
- Organise who will prepare what food & drink
- Arrange for transport to those who need it
- Source a venue, ideally with discounted or rent free
- Perfect your performance
