Christmas Community Lunch

24th April 2017, 10:04pm | By Steve |

This community group’s purpose is to help, empower and provide local support to those in poverty and those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged. It enables individuals and families to make a positive change through access to local services. Working with individuals and families on a one to one, free and confidential basis at their drop-in Centre.

Referrals to access their services and support are made via other organisations and agencies, the Primary Care Centre, the local Foodbank, schools, police, word of mouth or people can self-refer.

This group’s work covers a range of areas which include: housing and homelessness, disability, benefits, services for the unemployed, Financial Inclusion, health, including the annual Christmas Community Lunch.

What makes this project special: The Christmas Community Lunch was a resounding success. Over 60 people from age 3 to 97 sat down for Christmas Dinner in the town hall. The Mayor of Malmesbury and Lady Mayoress were on hand to welcome everyone and the Malmesbury Community Choir were there to entertain. Everyone was treated to a free three course meal and had a gift to take home.

This annual event truly is one that involves the whole community, including Waitrose, Hilditch Auctioneers, The Kings Arms, The Smoking Dog, Hobbs Bakery, Amanda’s Bistro, Greensquare Housing, The Front Room Marketing and both Malmesbury Co-op’s. Alongside a large team of volunteers who helped to invite guests & transport them to the event, helped in the run up & preparation and those who donated funds and food. On the day volunteers including the Local Youth Network, Malmesbury Secondary School Pupils, & Andy Waring a local chef, prepped food, cooked, served, entertained, decorated the venue and cleared away after, all in just 5 hours. How you can replicate this project where you live:

  • Identify the need – how to access those most in need?
  • Engage volunteers willing to support the event – Prepare food, decorate, serve, transport, clean up
  • Find a venue, and partner with local pub to help cook
  • Partner with local supermarkets & grocery stores for food donations
  • Allocate a central co-ordinator to oversee guest list & volunteers
