Calne Pocket Park – Discover Calne Trail

10th May 2021, 10:19am | By David |

Calne Pocket Park has launched and exciting new trail. The trail takes in many areas of Calne in a journey through the history and arts heritage of our town.

Entitled ‘Discover Calne’, the trail has been created by Sue Boddington and Tim Havenith, Trustees of Calne Heritage Centre; local historian, Nick Baxter; and Calne Town Councillor, John Boaler.

Fiona Campbell, Chair of the Pocket Park and project leader, wanted the team to look beyond the well known history and to ensure that the trail captured the important history of some of the women of Calne.

This wasn’t a difficult task as Calne has seen more than its fair share of influential, and community-focussed, women. These women, which include Ellinor Gabriel, a founder of St. Mary’s School, and Caroline Guthrie, founder of a children’s hospital in Calne, provided much needed provisions in the town.

Amongst these important points of interest, the trail also reveals information about the scientists, Joseph Priestley and Jan Ingenhousz, and author, Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

The trail takes in 19 points of interest covering various stages of Calne’s varied history and heritage in the accessible 1.7 mile route.

Traverse the trail today by collecting your free copy of the trail leaflet from the shed at the Calne Pocket Park. For those wanting to know more, a companion webpage can be accessed with a QR code on the leaflet.

The Calne Pocket Park can be found along the River Marden by Sainsbury’s supermarket.
