Leisure Credits

25th April 2017, 9:30pm | By Steve |

10.6 % of young people under 20 across Wiltshire live in low income families. Some of these young people have limited opportunities to get involved in the community.

In a nutshell:

Leisure credits is a project which involves young people going out and doing practical work in their local area, which benefits their community. The young people that take part in the project gain skills by using tools to clear scrub and making products, they also benefit by developing social skills and teamwork skills and they gain a good work ethic.

These sessions allow the young people earn credits based on their efforts which can be spent on reward activities and training courses. Leisure credit work sessions run on alternate Saturdays as well as two days a week during school holidays.

Our aim, is “To support the personal development of young people through the delivery of training and practical volunteering opportunities”.

What makes this project special:

We know from local feedback that by volunteering visibly in the community, relationships between the generations is improved, and young people who may previously have been seen as a problem are more appreciated by the wider community.  The young people themselves also take greater pride in and care for their environment reducing anti-social behaviour.

How can this be replicated:

  • Establish a need in the local area
  • Identify local young people that want to get involved
  • Work closely with local communities and landowners, Parish Councils, Wiltshire Community Area Board, county youth work charity Youth Action Wiltshire and other community groups
  • Contact Seeds4success for informal discussion
