Foodbank

‘Wiltshire has over 11,000 children (0‐19yrs) living in poverty, which represents 10.6% of children’

In a nutshell:

A foodbank is a volunteer-led service providing food for those families most in need.  The centres provide: emergency food parcels to people in crisis; a befriending and listening service for lonely, distressed or marginalised people; a charity shop with affordable goods and a community cafe; a supported volunteer programme for people with mental, social and physical difficulties; and a non-threatening drop-in site for Police Community Support Officers.

What makes this project special:

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.

Food donations

Non-perishable in-date food is donated by the public at a range of places, such as schools, churches and business, as well as supermarket collection points. It is then sorted into boxes by over 40,000 volunteers, to be given to people in need.

Food vouchers

Care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, schools and social workers identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. This entitles them to receive a foodbank parcel of three days’ nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food.

More Than Food

Foodbanks also offer a lot more than food. Volunteers provide a listening ear to clients over a warm drink, and signpost people to other charities and agencies who can help resolve the underlying cause of the crisis.

How you can replicate this project where you live:

  • Establish local need – is poverty an issue in your area?
  • Talk to Trussell Trust about setting up a Foodbank
  • Identify an accessible location
  • Identify local volunteers and organisers
  • Promote the scheme
  • Launch you Foodbank
