Over 300 young people took part in the 2nd Amesbury Festival of Youth at Bonnymead Park. From Tae Kwon Do, to Circus Skills, from Cheerleading to Streetdance, the youth of Amesbury are actively engaged in many activities and this was a chance for them all to show what they can do.
Jonathan Jester, one of the organisers was delighted. “Last year this was organised by the church, but this year a much wider range of people were involved in bringing this together. I was delighted with the turnout although I accept we have lessons to learn from this so we can ensure that even more young people are involved next year.” Youngsters from the Youth Café and the Elements Café volunteered to help set up the sideshows. Wyndham Hall Youth Club provided tables and chairs, BMX riders put on a display. We didn’t just have a first aid point.. we had CPR lessons from Collingwood Services for anybody who wanted to find out about defibulators or resuscitation. The Amesbury Juniors ran football skills workshops and we made good use of the available space. It was great to see so many people actively having fun.
The Bucking Bronco was very popular but we managed to keep queues down to acceptable levels with so much going on. Where else can you actually get to use an Aerial Rig in a circus workshop?Last year Tony Prior led this event, but he could not do it this year, however having already had one, it was helpful using last years plans and building on them. “Lots of people kept reminding me about deadlines and ensuring we got this right, so I am very pleased it all went well.” Said Jonathan.
Next year we really want the parade to have more people in it and there are a lot of people who want to join us. I think this should become a fixture on the calendar for Amesbury.
